The day after our adventures at the beach and redwoods, it was time to head home. We said our farewells and took some more photos.
I remembered to get a photo with Ethan for the calendar (since we share a birthday).
Gabe wanted to be in it too.
We got a picture of all the kids
and then loaded into the car.
We took a little detour to see Crater Lake National Park, and the drive was beautiful.
Michael didn't want to get out to see the lake, and I don't know that I super blame him because it was so cold and windy!
We got a nice stranger to take a picture of our whole family.
Did I mention that it was cold and super windy?
Because it really was.
After a quick stop in the visitor's center to grab some food for the road, use the bathroom, and buy a Christmas ornament, we hit the road again, but not before getting a picture in front of the Park sign.
It was too cold to get out of the car again, and we had a long drive ahead of us.
We drove and drove and drove all the way back into Idaho. We grabbed a sub-par dinner from somewhere in Eastern Oregon, and then arrived really late at Emily's house in Caldwell. The next morning, we got a tour and got to see the progress of her remodel. (Her house was a total construction zone, but we could see the potential there. We saw Henry before he headed off to school, but we missed Wyatt since he left before we woke up. We saw Jack, and of course, Emily and Pete, but I forgot to take any pictures.
We left Emily's house and went in search of the famous Baked Potato ice cream place that we'd found when looking up roadside attractions for this trip (Oregon had next to none.) We tried Mozzarella sticks as well, and they were SO good!
Here's the baked potato. The picture doesn't do it justice. It looked just like a baked potato, but it was 100% ice cream and sweet toppings.
We all liked it.
So, if you ever want to go here, it's called Westside Drive In.
The next roadside stop was the Big Idaho Potato Hotel. Google maps had this in two different places. The first was downtown Boise, a few blocks away from Drive-in Diner with the potato ice cream. There was nothing but sketchiness there, so we headed to the next location. We were prepared to ditch the whole thing since we're REALLY bad at doing stops on drives. We're the kind of people who just want to get where we're going. It's not about the journey for us--strictly the destination! But, Rachel really wanted to see it, so we found it, several miles east of Boise off of a very random exit and down a seemingly abandoned road in the middle of farmland.
This large spud has an actual hotel room inside of it. Apparently, you can rent it for $200ish a night. Once upon a time, it traveled the country and somehow landed here.
The best part of stopping here was Dolly, the cow. They had feed for her, and so when we pulled up, she came running. We each took a turn feeding Dolly, laughing at the randomness of this little spot in the middle of nowhere, Idaho.
Michael wasn't even going to get out of the car here, but even he couldn't resist Dolly's charms.
After the potato, we headed straight home, only stopping for food and gas. I was never so happy to see the Utah sign after driving through Idaho! It was so much driving. Salt Lake and Highland welcomed us with lots of rain, but we were so happy to be home we didn't care. It was an amazing trip, and we're so glad we made it happen!
Oh! And Rachel learned a solo dance this year, and so we thought it would be fun to perform it at our different stops on our road trip and make a fun video with it, so here' Rachel dancing through our road trip:
