The more into photography I've gotten, the more I've discovered that I just don't really enjoy studio photography. It's just not my style. So, I decided that I wanted my photography studio to get repurposed as a craft studio. I wanted it to still be able to be used as a guest room when family came to visit, but still be able to be a craft room the rest of the time. I spent quite a while scheming, dreaming, and designing this room. I even made renderings in Photoshop to make sure that my vision would actually work AND look good.
To solve the guest room issue, we decided on a sofa sleeper. It was tricky finding one that was small enough to fit in the room, but we finally found one that fit the bill, both size-wise and money-wise. When the delivery guys brought it, they tried so many times to fit it through the door, and it wouldn't fit. They took the door off and decided to try one more time. Thankfully, it made it through the door and into the room. It's going to be a huge pain to get out again, but for now, we don't care.
For the table, we added castors to two 2x2 square units (They've been called Kallax before, but I don't know if it's still called that).
These two pieces would then be part of my table that I could move around the room as each project would require. The ends would have nice storage as well. IKEA had table tops, but we couldn't find one that was the exact width of these units, so Brian added a strip of trim to make it the same width.
Once that was dry, we added latches to the tabletop and the cube units. These secure the table to the cube units when I need the table and make it so the table top can be removed when guests come to visit.
To keep the help keep the table-top in the right place while in use, we added trim pieces to the bottom of the table top to create a channel for the cube units to fit snugly within.
When it's assembled, it looks like this:
And when a guest comes over, I unlatch the table top and tuck it against the wall. The cube unit "legs" then get placed next to the wall side by side so that the long sides are agains the wall.
I wanted to have better storage for my scrapbook paper, so I someone's design for creating paper storage inside a 2x8 Kallax (cube) unit. I wanted the paper to be hidden behind one of their door inserts, so we adapted the plans to take the door insert into consideration. We got quarter round trim pieces to be the mini shelf supports, and Brian helped me cut down some thin pieces of plywood to be the shelves.
The tutorial for the paper storage said to attach the shelf supports with hot glue, so that's what we did.
Adding the shelves:
I used Alex drawer units for my desk, and another matching table-top to make a desk. I also used taller Alex drawers for more storage to the left of my desk.
I made one more moveable 2x2 Kallax Cube with castors for my heat press stand.
In addition to door inserts for the Kallax units, I also got drawer inserts. I wanted to have as much organization as possible. We also found these dividers that divided the Kallax squares into 9 smaller squares, which are so perfect for holding my vinyl rolls.
And we got this cool pegboard from IKEA as well.
We got these chalkboards years ago to go in Michael's room, and they've been sitting in a closet for the past few years. I hung them up on the wall too.
There is still a lot of organizing to do, but I'm so excited to have so many drawers, cupboards, and shelves to do it. I worked hard to get as much done as I could by the end of February. I think I forgot to mention that Ethan moved back in with us in January (the weekend we got home from our cruise) to work and save money. McCallan contacted us in February and asked if he could come live with us during the week since his job as the GM at Buffalo Wild Wings was killing him, and he was going to start working with Ethan building fences. We got everything put together just in time for him to move in at the beginning of March.
(Cal helped us figure out how to make the sofa sleeper more comfortable by making a bunky board. Now if you ever have to stay in this room, you won't have the metal rods digging into your back, all thanks to Cal). Now, I have an awesome second guest room/craft room combo!
