Last August, I started teaching piano lessons. It was something I had planned on doing back when I was a teenager and before my mission, but somewhere along the lines, I forgot about that plan. Last summer, one of the teachers in the neighborhood decided to quit teaching, and my Facebook feed was flooded with people trying to find a replacement teacher. I read about waiting lists and people trying to find a teacher close to home for their kids. I remembered my life-long plan and decided to go for it (after lots of encouragement from Brian and Lea). Looking back, I can't decide if the timing was good or bad, since as soon as school started, I started feeling quite awful with my pregnancy, and there were many days were I thought that piano was much more than I could handle. However, I think it helped me feel like there was something I could still offer when my low energy levels wouldn't allow me to do much.
I love my students, and I love teaching. I have really loved watching each one grow. I pray at the start of each lesson day that I can meet their many needs and help them learn and love music. I still feel like an impostor, but nobody has called me out yet. I had my first recital as a teacher on June 1. Michael, who has been taking lessons from Lea, joined my little studio at our recital since all of Lea's other students are clarinetists.
He did a great job, and even inspired one of my students to find the song that he played and learn it!I left reliving the whole thing and thinking about everything that I could have done better. I made plenty of mistakes, but for our first go at this, I think it turned out well. I'm so proud of all my students and the progress they all made. One of them worked on his song for eight months!
