And now for the less noteworthy (but somewhat vital) things in our lives:
We started the year off obsessed with Encanto.
We decided it was time to call it quits on this pillowcase that Brian got on his mission, made with love by Sister Dudley (I think).
At our New Year's house party, one of our guests broke Gabe's remote control dinosaur's arm. Thankfully, after sending in this picture, the company sent him a new one.
Gabe and I continued coordinating.
The Young Women's president made me a third counselor in the presidency, and I got moved to the youngest group of girls. Four of them were brand new to the program, so I got to put together a welcome goody bag and go around and meet them all. They are such a great group of girls.
In an effort to make everyday special, we celebrated Gracie's birthday (January 4). She's four now!
We got her this toy that has a smaller toy inside. She loved it.
Thanks to the sourdough starter from Serene, I took on sourdough baking again.
Salon Saville had more clients.
Michael gave me an opportunity to practice cutting hair with scissors, since he wanted his hair on top longer than the clipper guard would allow. I watched a few tutorials on Youtube to try to figure it out. I think it turned out okay.
And there was at least one moment where all three children sat really close together and didn't fight. I think Michael was reading a story out of the Illustrated Old Testament Stories.
Since January is Rachel's birthday month, she got to fill out this spotlight newspaper. It was so cute!
I was flattered to be highlighted in her hero section, but when I read what she wrote, I knew it was going to be interpreted quite badly at school and I worried DCFS might be called on me.
(Meet My Hero Mom. My mom is amazing. I have so many memories (including the [time] Mom started kissing me in weird places). I love her and she does a lot for me.)
I reluctantly explained to Rachel that that might sound alarming to someone else. We both knew that the weird places she referred to were on her head--like her ear because, not being one for a lot of physical affection, she turned her head when I went in to kiss her cheek and kissed her ear instead. This made her laugh, so I kissed her other ear or something like that. I was happy she loved that memory, but I told her that someone else might interpret this to mean another place on her person that a mother should NOT be kissing. She kindly erased it and wrote something else.
Gracie got a bath.
Rachel earned a new game on her tablet that let you design a wedding outfit, complete with shoes, jewelry, hairstyle, veil, and, of course, a dress. Rachel insisted I give it a try.
We decided to part ways with most of the remaining bath toys. This blue hippo has been with us since Michael was a baby, but it was time to move on. RIP, faithful friends.
We had some evening snuggles.
We got to see progress on the temples in the area.
One of us got creative in hauling supplies downstairs.
We contemplated a career as a sunglasses model.
We did homework.
Worked on crafts. Played games.
Enjoyed yummy gifts from our friends.
And learned how to make Eggs Benedict.
All in all, it was a great January, but we happily embraced February when it arrived.
