Once upon a time, Valentine's was not my favorite. I never made it to bitterly calling it "Single's Awareness Day" though because my Dad always got us something special---chocolates, flowers, balloons, or even stuffed animals. Because of him (and most likely my mom), I've really just tried using Valentine's Day as an excuse to shower my kids with cheesy expressions of love and affection, always sincerely, of course.
To kick off the season of love, Rachel's dance studio hosted a "Bring your Dad to Dance" day. Brian told me that they wore him out!
I love helping with the Valentine's boxes for school, but I have to hold myself back so I don't take over. This is Rachel's box which I got to give a few suggestions for, but mostly, it was all her.
Michael's school throws a special 6th grade dance on Valentine's day, and this was the thing I REALLY needed to get back from Florida for. I was not going to miss it! The sixth grade class had been learning all kinds of dances throughout the year. Here's Michael with his group of friends.
The cafeteria was really decked out for the event, and each student contributed by making the fluffy hearts on the wire.
I loved being able to dance with him.
He's in that fun stage where he's starting to like girls but where it's starting to be awkward interacting with them, especially at a dance. He was nervous and tried to act like he didn't enjoy dancing with the girls. Maybe he didn't overall, but I can tell there's a piece of him that's starting to enjoy those interactions, even with the awkwardness.
Here's Michael's heart that he made.
Here's Michael with his AMAZING teacher, Mrs. Tenney. Seriously, we love her so much!
Her dedication to helping shape Michael was next level this year. We'll sing her praises forever.
Brian got me flowers. I went with him and got to pick them out. We also picked up balloons and a small stuffed animal for the kids. I never took a picture of the arrangement, but for some reason, the carnage that happened afterwards got a photo. I think Brian actually ended up arranging the flowers for me, and he did such a great job that I'm sad I never took a picture of them.
We most likely had pink heart-shaped pancakes for dinner because that's what we normally do. Rachel showcased all her Valentine spirit in her outfit, compliments of Jenny and our nanny Chandler (who we hired to help on piano lesson days YEARS ago, and they STILL fit.)
You gotta love how cheesy and awesome the pre-made Valentines are. This one reminds us of a quote from one of our favorite TV shows, Leverage, where one of the villains in the show refers to himself as The Mako, but the protagonists spend the episode poking fun at that and pretending they don't know what his moniker is. "What was it again?" "The Blowfish, I think." It's what we think of every time we see Mako on something.
Our big Valentine's date was to go to Anastasia in the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake when Broadway Across America came with its tour. We got dinner at a nearby Indian Fast Food place nearby, which was good, but they didn't have Naan, which was a bummer.
The show was really excellent, not surprisingly way better than the production American Fork High put on last year.
And we even got snacks.
