Now, I'm not saying that I'm not living happily ever after, because I think, for the most part, I am. But a funny thing happened along the way. So far, it's ran into a couple of hitches, one in September and one just a few weeks ago. My baby is 2 years old and counting, and there is no little sibling yet. We went to the dry cleaners last week (the same day that I went into the doctor for my two-week follow-up miscarriage appointment), and the lady there kept talking to Michael and saying how cute he is. I was so happy that he was behaving so well, and smiled at her praise of him, despite feeling quite melancholy, when she said, "Oh, I bet you want a little brother or sister to play with, don't you? You want a little brother? Yeah, you want a little brother." Honestly, I was kind of embarrassed for her more than I was hurt, but her question emphasizes that my life isn't going according to plan.
I've been obsessing over having another baby since July, waiting for those tell-tale signs of pregnancy. Two happy days. Two times of celebrating and planning and hoping followed by two sessions of devastation. So, after six months, I'm tired of it. I'm tired of buying clothes that I can wear now and can wear into the first stages of pregnancy. I'm tired of making plans according to which trimester I might be in if I got pregnant this month. I'm sick of taking Tylenol instead of Ibuprofen just in case. So, to copy a friend, I'm setting some new goals. (She calls hers her baby bucket list--things she wants to do before she has a baby). I feel like I need to focus on things that will make me happy, not in a selfish way, but in a healthy, no-one's-happy-if-mom-ain't-happy kind of way. In some ways, it's just a coping strategy, but whatever. I hope to continue these even after I have another baby, if that is in the cards down the line.
So here's what I'm focusing on:
- Gardening. Those who know me know that I have a black thumb. I'm trying to fix that. I'm learning about gardening, what to plant, when to plant it, how to plant it. I've designed planter boxes to go on our patio so we can plant some good stuff this summer. I may be taking a class at Thanksgiving Point next month.
- Last week, I applied to go to grad school here:
It's enough to make a Cougar shiver in her boots, but they're the only ones around with the program I'm interested in. So, now we'll see if I get in. I'd been planning on applying, but wasn't sure how I would do it with a newborn. I'm not worrying about that anymore. I figure I can get in at least two full semesters, starting in May. I don't have all the details sorted, and I may not even get in, but here's the goal. If I don't get in, I'll be taking some fun classes like photography or a dance class instead.
3. Two words:
4. On a related note:
August 10 in Salt Lake City
Other things in the works: Re-finish the twin bed down stairs and put it in Michael's room, work on new quilt for Michael's new bed, refinish some dressers, lose weight/get in shape, mixbook, and spend more time reading and playing with Michael.

I love this post! I really admire you go get em attitude and that's awesome that you are trying to get into graduate school. More school is always good. Love you Dev!
I´m glad there were people around to help you through some of your hard spots this past month. I am a true believer that whatever doesn´t kill us, usually does make us stronger (if we allow it to!). You are definitely coming out stronger, and think it is great to focus on you for a little while. You never got that luxury after getting married! I hope things melt around there fast, and the flowers bloom (and your green thumb grows...send a little green thumb my way too, please?!!) and that the Springs holds many wonderful surprises. Love you! p.s. totally jealous about Wicked. Still haven´t seen it, still probably won´t get a chance to!
I love this post. It is exactly what I needed tonight. While I haven't lost any babies yet, I've been trying to get pregnant again for awhile...and it is really hard not to get sad each time another month comes and goes. Thanks for this. I think I'm going to follow suit.
Hey darling sister! You are awesome. I am one of those who wants more kids, but don't have the timing right, literally. So I am working on the grad school thing. I have a book on container gardening I should give you.
Awesome goals! While trying to get pregnant with Angela it took 9 months and lots of fertility drugs, I was going insane. I planned everything thinking I would be pregnant, it was an AWFUL year. This time it has been over a year since we lost the baby and we keep trying, but the big difference is I am not PLANNING on being pregnant. While it is still REALLY HARD I am so much better to be around!
I really like your goals ... mine is the 1/2 Marathon in June. If I'm not pregnant then at least I'll have something to look forward to ;)
I am thinking of you and I love you. I know some of what you feel. I am so sorry.
I don't know if you read the BYU Magazine this month but there is an amazing article in it: http://magazine.byu.edu/?act=view&a=2968 I LOVED it.
And one one particular day (last week) when I got yet another negative pregnancy test I read this article in the Ensign and it REALLY helped me: http://www.lds.org/ensign/2011/12/an-answer-for-every-what-if?lang=eng
The biggest challenge for me growing up is understanding that I have very little control as to what goes on in my life. I NEVER would have thought trying to get pregnant would have been so hard. I NEVER understood miscarriages until I had one. There is so much we learn in this life! And a lot of it is REALLY HARD. I still struggle day by day sometimes.
One thing that has really helped me is remembering to count my blessings. EVERY NIGHT no matter what, I write down 10 things I am grateful for. Somedays it's "I remembered to brush my teeth." But other days it's not. It has really helped me to go to bed with a positive outlook on tomorrow and help me to look for the blessings in my day.
I really do love you and my heart aches for you Devri. I am thinking of you and praying for you. God does bring about miracles.
Thank you for your post. We lost our baby New Years day. He was 19 weeks old and all I can think about is when I'll get pregnant again. I will definitely try to change my focus and work on things to improve myself instead.
We will be in Utah over conference weekend if you want to get together. We will be there the Wed before conference.

Oh Devri, I could show you so many journal entries that are exactly like this blog post. I think it's a great idea. It is so hard to have plans, and then be devastated, and try to move on. Kudos to you! I'm excited about all the things on your bucket list.
Life is funny. I've always wanted to have a Maters Degree. Instead, I have 2 semesters of school and 6 kids. (Don't get me wrong, I'm very blessed to have my kids and I know it, but I've always loved learning!) I've learned that our plans are not Heavenly Father's plans. Someday, I'll go back to school and someday Micheal will have a sibling. Until then, we do the best we can with the life Heavenly Father has BLESSED us with...
Good for you for making new goals- just don't forget to grieve. I'm stuck in the 9 years of trying to stay so busy and accomplish so many things because of my miscarriages that it is now gotten the best of me. When making time for yourself, make time to really feel and grieve for your losses. When we stay so busy, as my therapist says it, "we don't have time to feel" and then it all gets bottled up and it rears its ugly head months, years later adn we start moving into the dysfunctional feelings of depression, anxiety, going crazy, etc. Anyway, I hope you are coping well.
