Texas Vacation, Part 4: San Antonio and Beginning the Journey Home

After leaving the ranch, Lea and Shayne headed to Corpus Christi to see Shayne's brother for a few days. Then, Shayne flew home to get back to work, and Lea drove her van full of boys back west and met us in San Antonio at the Alamo on Monday, June 11.  As we drove from Adam and Sarah's house to the Alamo, I read parts of a book that I got for Michael about the Alamo so that we were all refreshed/educated on the story so that we would get more out of the experience.

We took a few group shots before entering the historic chapel.

We walked reverently through the old church/chapel. They didn't allow photography inside.

After walking through the Chapel, we headed out to the yard/grounds behind. I didn't know they would have actors and hands on exhibits going on after we went through the old chapel. It was pretty cool.

After touring the grounds, we headed into the gift shop, where things got a little stressful. Brian got the souvenir pennies taken care of while I ran to the bathroom, where I thought I was going to throw up. I'm not sure what kind of nasty thing I had going on, but it was a little miserable. I wished I could have thrown up to bring my churning stomach some relief, but their was none to have. While I was gone, three kids were wandering around a gift shop looking for souvenirs, and Brian was struggling to keep them all in line and happy. We found a few things, but Rachel left empty handed, and she was MAD! She was crying. We had intended to take a picture of all of us in front of the Alamo after our tour instead of forking out the big bucks for the picture they took for us. Rachel would not stop crying, and she wouldn't get in a picture, and by that point, Lea's crew had given up on us and were heading towards the Riverwalk. Brian took this picture to commemorate the meltdown!
And those of us still willing to stand in a picture were in this one in front of the Alamo.
And since Rachel wasn't in it, I decided to hunt down the picture the Alamo people took online and bought it after all.

We met back up with Lea to explore the Riverwalk. It was so so so so hot! We had to stop and get ice cream for these tired, hot, impatient, ready-to-be home kids.
Then we decided to hop on one of the river cruises so we could see more of the city without having to walk, which I was most grateful for since I was still feeling quite miserable.

San Antonio is a beautiful city and was celebrating its 400th birthday. That's pretty old for the U.S.!

We finally made it back to the car and headed west to begin our long journey back. The journey home was much better since we were caravanning with Lea and her crew, but we were all pretty tired by then and just wanted to be home.

We stayed at a hotel in some town in Texas that I can't remember the name of anymore. Gabe barely moved when we moved him from the car into his bed.
We had our last breakfast of Texas waffles the next morning and then headed into New Mexico.
